What is Local GeoGrid?

Local GeoGrid is a rank tracking tool that lets you track your Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business) rankings in different locations on a map. For example, in different suburbs in a given city.

This way, you can see where your Google Business Profile listing ranks in Google’s local results for the keywords of your choice and how the rankings evolve over time. With this tool you could, for example, discover the suburbs in your city where your or your client's business ranks well and where it does not.

Here is what the results looks like.

How to Use Local GeoGrid

Local GeoGrid is available in both Local Tracker and Instant Check.

We recommend that you use Local GeoGrid in Local Tracker if you want to regularly check keyword positions on the map and track progress over time and that you use it in Instant Check if you want to occasionally check keyword positions on the map.

Using Local GeoGrid in Local Tracker

To track a new keyword, open Local Tracker and go to the Local GeoGrid section. Then, select a site in the drop-down menu located at the top left and click on the blue + button located at the top right. If you can't find the site you're looking for in the drop-down menu, it means you haven't added it to Site Manager yet. You can find out how to add a site to Site Manager here.

Please note that you must also add your Google Business Profile details to Site Manager if you have not already done so. You can do this by going to Site Manager, select the site in question, click on the 3-dot icon at the top right hand side and select Edit Site. You will then have the choice to add the information manually, or connect to Google Business Profile.

Once you click on the blue + button in Local GeoGrid, you will then need to fill in the form:

Enter a Search Term and Address. Note Google will suggest a few addresses to you. Select the appropriate one.
The Business Name field is pre-filled. The system uses the business name you entered in Site Manager. Make sure it's exactly as displayed in Google My Business.
Select a Distance Type (kilometers or miles) and Distance that you want to cover.
Select a Country, Grid Size and choose a Check Period (either 7 or 30 days).

Once you're done with completing the form, click on the "View on Map" button. You will then see a preview, as shown below. You may then for example, modify the Distance or Grid Size as required. If everything is fine, click on the search button.

The search can take a little while, about 30 minutes on average. Once the search is completed, you will then be directed back to the Local GeoGrid section, where you can see a table listing all the keywords you searched for, with some useful information including the average position, number of keywords in the Top 5, 10 and 20 and more.

If you click on a keyword, you will see the map results. Each number represents a position in this specific location.

You can easily switch from a check date to another by using the drop-down menu located at the top right of the map or the slider located under the map. This way, you can see exactly where you or your client ranks for, in different locations on a map and track positions over time. Note these positions are your or your client's keyword positions in Google's local results.

Click on the 3-dot icon above the map and you will be given the option to export to PDF or to delete the grid.

Note that it is also possible to send a keyword direct from Local Tracker to Local Geogrid. Simply click on the three dot icon at the right end of the keyword and you will see the option to "Send to Local GeoGrid".

Local GeoGrid in Instant Check

The same principles used in Local Tracker apply to Instant Check, except that you can check the keyword positions of any business, and not necessarily businesses associated with sites you have added to Site Manager.

To start, open Instant Check and go to the Local GeoGrid section. Then, click on the blue + button located at the top right.

You will then be asked to fill in the same information as under Local Tracker, with the exception that for check period you will be given a choice between a normal check (takes up to 18 hours) or an instant check (less than 30 minutes). Note that an instant check will cost you two times more credits than a normal check.

Once the search is completed, you can view the results under the Instant Check's Local GeoGrid section, where you can see a table listing all the keywords you searched for, with some useful information including the average position, number of keywords in the Top 5, 10 and 20 and more. Please note that you can re-do past searches in Instant Check, as shown below, which will allow you to compare keyword positions at different points in time.

You can export keyword positions, in the form of a CSV file, by clicking on the icon at the top right hand side of the results table.

All the data generated in Local GeoGrid can be included in reports that you can create and even schedule in the Site Reports section or even included in client dashboards that you create in the Agency Dashboard section, if you have the Agency add-on. You can read more about Agency Dashboard here.
